Uncomfortable Conversations – Why They Are Needed

O U T T S P O K E N

What are the conversations you need to have with those around you that may seem uncomfortable, but needed in order to grow?

We are living in a world filled with many different individuals of a different race, gender, faith and sexuality. And not all of us may see eye to eye when it comes to these things. But how do we treat one another? How do we treat those who are different from all the things we may have been brought up to believe.

This message is also to the many Christians I’ve come across and know. How are we treating those who are different? Do we still carry the principle of loving our neighbour. Or is our bias so deep that we only love the ones who are like us. Believe like us and only have the same values. This question runs so deep for so many other religions and races. This misconceived idea of only loving those who look, act and believe in the ways of you and your family.

Growing up, I was taught to love everyone no matter who they are and what they look like. Which I am thankful for. Not all of us may be blessed to have family that follow this principle, but what can you personally do. What uncomfortable conversations do you think are needed for those around you? We need to be able to understand the differentiation of having differences, yet loving and accepting people for who they are. Many times in life we can disagree with something or someone because of differences which is normal. It’s a good thing we all have differences, but never allow that to be the reason why we then treat someone in a way that makes them feel worthless. Today, two very close people said something valuable to me.”How can we except to grow, if we we are surrounded by only people who are like us”.

To be able to have certain conversations that we are not comfortable with, requires a lot of us to self reflect. Reflect on the reasons why you may find certain topics so difficult. Many of us need to pull out the deep roots of the subconscious bias, that have been nurtured and watered to grow in the environments we live in, and have formed as a plant without realising.

Would love to see your thoughts on this topic. What uncomfortable conversations do you feel are needed either for yourself or someone you know?
